I wasn’t going planning to blog about her but I might as well throw in something. In case you don’t know what she did, please refer to this. I think what she did is wrong, insensitive, and not at all classy as she seems to think of herself to be. I’ve read about her years ago in society pages so I’m pretty sure she’s stinking rich. I guess that paved the way for her to have her own column and other writing gigs. Who the fuck cares? Who takes those so-called writers seriously anyway? Most of the time, they’re just spewing hot air. A lot of people are calling for a boycott or getting her fired. I say why not take other society writers down with her. They’re a waste of newspaper space. What I don’t like about this debacle are comments about her size. Why does this affect me? Because it associates fat with all the negativity she caused. Criticize her boorish behavior all you want but her fat didn’t make her that.

That’s why I posted my blog entry. I initially promised that I wouldn’t react to the issue anymore. However, reading some comments in which people lash at her because they say she’s a pig that’s why she’s got a “pig” behavior annoyed me. I only hear those kind of “comments” from: 1) kids having a playground fight, and 2) from uneducated people.

Prudence, your blog entry made me write this one. Like you, I was getting tired of comments aimed at her size. As if her size contributed to the way she is acting right now. I think it would be better to ignore her. She wasn’t so popular before but now she’s in the spotlight and might even be basking in it.

Malu Fernandez called attention to her own bulk when she wrote that Emirates’ economy class seats ‘were so small I had bruises on my legs’.

When irate readers resorted to hitting her back by picking on her size, they were just taking her up on her own crass game of prejudice and humiliating others. Simply put: You call me stinky, I’ll call you fat.

Samantha,

I disagree. Economy class seats really are small and everybody complains about that. I’m not defending her, I just disagree that she called attention to her size.

I actually agree with you on this, it’s very argumentum ad hominem. That’s why I refuse to talk about it on my blog.

it can be because of our cultural notions of beauty, but this really shouldn’t be the case. I guess my stand would be blame her for what she wrote, but don’t attack her for her physical appearance because this has nothing to do with what she wrote.

Fat or not, the woman dug her own grave anyway. Size does not determine what a person’s all about. Only in this case, I can’t really blame most people for aiming at her weight.

Lots of angry people out there… they see her appearance as a weakness they could use to swing back something at her. A low blow for a low blow…

I would not call those who are hurt by her words and threw random insults about her weight uneducated… they’re just hurt people…

I’m not svelte. My German husband is huge, fat, overweight. We’ve traveled on Emirates more than a dozen times, both in business and coach. But for crying out load, we’ve never, ever bruised or injured our legs on account of any diminutive plane seats! Tell me otherwise, and I would be the first to champion your cause for wider chairs on board!

Just be brave enough to say you agree with Malu’s blinkered, bigoted thoughts so I can invite other blog readers to visit this site and discuss in all thoroughness why prejudiced corpulent attacks against the sensibilities of hardworking OFWs must NEVER be tolerated at all cost, even if pegged on the premise of a very uncomfortable plane ride.

Regarding what Malu Fernandez wrote, there’s only one approach to the issue as far as I’m concerned - argumentum ad personam. Attack the tactless proponent to discredit her and her intolerant, discriminatory snide remarks that saw print in widely circulated publications. Besides, to stick to substance would just invite the discourse to move beyond skin deep. God knows what sort of maggots lie within Malu Fernandez’s adipose tissues.

Samantha,

Well I’ve never flied Emirates because I couldn’t afford their air fare. I would have to trust what you say and agree that their economy class seats are spacier than other airlines’.

As I’ve said in my entry, I do not agree with Malu Fernandez’ views on OFWs so there’s no need for me to be ‘brave’ and proclaim that I am like bigoted as well. I worked overseas for awhile and that makes me a former OFW.

Thanks for clearing that one out dementia. I and most of my brothers and sisters work abroad, too.

Let’s keep up the fight for and in behalf of millions of OFWs forced to live dire situations - leaving family behind, having to endure loneliness, bitter winters, discrimination, isolation, etc.

Let’s stand for what’s right. I know it would be convenient for others to just stay passive and let other people be at the frontline of battles. Thanks for making a stand, and even more thanks for letting that stand be known to others.

I’ve read so many comments that reek of size discrimination. I remember one post saying that it isn’t prejudice or bigotry to criticize Malu Fernandez’ weight since it is indeed a problem and that everybody should strive to be in a healthy size. Another comment said that if she were only as beautiful as Gretchen Barretto, then perhaps she could have gotten away for writing such. What can ISAA do about this?

Prudence,

I decided not to make the issue into an ISAA thing. I feel like there’s a mob mentality to the issue. That’s why I chose to air my opinion in my personal blog rather than on the ISAA blog or comment on other people’s nasty blog entries. I am still revolted with some of the comments about her weight, especially the ones in the youtube video about her.

I hope we can learn to forgive Malu Fernandez. I wrote an entry about her article and I hope you can find time to read it. It’s entitled “One Voice (An OFW’s reaction to Malu Fernandez’s “From Greece to Boracay”)” and I posted it here: http://lestercavestany.com/?p=10

Lester,

I read your entry but it would take a long long time before Filipinos can forgive her. Her apology doesn’t seem sincere and I don’t think she has learned her lesson yet.

Have you heard? SHE’S BACK!
This time, the target of her ire is, surprise, surprise!
Bloggers and anonymous commenter’s.
I won’t provide the link.
That move will only make her be in the limelight again which she so sorely crave like last year.

I read about it from MLQ3’s and Carlos Celdran’s blogs. She’s just KSP. Maybe she wants to be mentioned in Brian Gorrell’s blog.
