Goodbye, Michael!

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

My childhood wouldn’t be complete without Michael Jackson’s music. I have distinct memories associated with some of his songs. Like the time when there was a brownout and my teenage cousin was very much into MJ. He played Thriller to scare me one night and it worked. I never became a fan though but I’m familiar with his music particularly during his “Bad” period. When MJ started getting weird, I was turned off and joined the “Wacko Jacko” name-calling. You have to admit, the guy is weird. When I learned about his death, it came as a shock. Just the previous night I learned that Farrah Fawcett passed away. Another celebrity death was a shocker especially since MJ was young. I didn’t mourn that time but as days passed and my memories associated with Michael Jackson resurfaced, it hit me that he is gone. He was always just there, being wacko but he was alive. So right now as I’m watching the memorial on CNN, I couldn’t help but tear up. It’s like saying goodbye to childhood.

Modern Alchemists and Purveyors of Curious Goods

I stumbled upon D.L. & Co. by accident and fell absolutely in love. It’s gothic luxury at its finest!

Douglas Little is the man behind the company. He’s also a decorator and stylist whose designed special gothic window displays for Bergdorf Goodman (It was featured in House and Garden magazine. See photos here under events.). Here are some of my favorite items from his shop.

I saw this item in Modern Alchemy but it’s not in the online shop. I want it sooooo bad.

D.L. & Co. also sells fragrance candles but I have to smell them before I decide if I like them or not. My olfactory nerves are really sensitive.

All of the items I posted are expensive. These are luxury items for the monied romantic goths. I want to own a perfume watch or even the diffuser but I can’t afford them. I’ll just keep on dreaming…

Halloween 2008

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

My Halloween for this year was fun. I had a Medusa costume made. The dress was a big fat failure but the head dress is a winner. The costume is expensive but I don’t care anymore.

Jenny was with me and we had dinner at my uncle’s Figaro franchise in High Street. It was a good meal and even better because it was for free. A couple of my relatives were there, checking out the people and me in costume. I just let them be. Why deprive them of any fun, right?

Jenny and I finally went to Eternal Death Wake a bit past 9pm. Mag:net was packed and we weren’t able to get a table so we just sat on some speakers. The bands could only perform 3 songs each because of the long line-up. We rocked to Scarlet Tears which I am a fan of and Jenny is a convert now. When the noisier goth bands were on stage, we headed outside to smoke and chatter. We met some new people which was neat. I was complaining how the place was so packed and the heat was killing me. I told Jenny we’ll go home already (this was only around 10pm) but when we went down, I talked to Pola and Katrina and then decided to go with them to Cubao-X.

Pola and her boyfriend decided not to go to Cubao-X anymore so we dropped them off near Farmer’s Mart. There wasn’t much people in Cubao-X when we got there but we saw old UP college pals at Mogwai and they asked us to join them.

Pola surprised us by arriving sans boyfriend but it was already late when she got there and we were about to go home. I didn’t get to hang out with Katrina and company because I was busy catching up with college friends. Sorry, Katrina. Jenny and I left around 2:30am because I needed to prepare for my out-of-town trip.

I had a lot of fun at Cubao-X. It was more fun that Eternal Death Wake actually and I’m glad I went there. This year’s Halloween was a blast and I’m so glad I went out unlike last year.

The photos in this post were taken either by Katrina or Jenny. I couldn’t take photos because of my lashes.

Dead Can Dance Re-Issue Box Set

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

4AD is going to release a box set of Dead Can Dance’s albums! DCD is essential listening, folks. Lisa Gerrard’s voice is really something else. If you’re not familiar with her, you would have heard her voice in the Gladiator Soundtrack. Remember that? Yes, that was her. Anyway, the box set will contain 9 remastered albums of DCD. I have a few of their albums but I still want this. The box set is quite expensive though. £120.00 in particular.

Steampunked Moleskins

I haven’t browsed boingboing.net for ages but thanks to them, I have these to add to my wish list:

The photos here are the notebooks I want. They’re expensive. $36 for a large one and $22 for small but they’re works of art. I wonder how the etching was done. Anyone feeling generous out there? There are more designs at modofly.net

R.I.P. Vampira

Vampira.jpg

Maila Nurmi, more popularly known as playing the role of Vampira, died last January 10. She came before Elvira and even sued her for copying her style. She gained a cult following later on in her career. Even actors became her fans. Despite her popularity, she experienced a lot of hardship as she aged. She became stereotyped for playing the horror mistress so producers didn’t hire her for any other role except for something horror-related. She had to give up her acting career and just settled for opening up an antique shop in her home and showing up in conventions. She died at the age of 86 but  her image will remain immortal especially among fans and goth women who idolize her.
