SONA

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

Okay. So I’ve read the transcript of PGMA’s speech and watched the replay of the event. I know diddly-squat about parliamentary and federalism which PGMA proposed for the the Philippines to adapt but this one I know. Democracy has stopped working for the Philippines decades ago. Just look at the state this country is in. The poverty is so widespread and is still increasing, candidates play dirty during elections, polititians cannot be trusted anymore and this includes the President, and this list could go on and on. It is easy to be corrupt in the Philippine democracy and as politicians come and go, the decay of the country continues. I think now is the time for the charter change because if not now, then when? This country needs a radical change immediately and just waiting for a calmer period might spoil the urge. You can say that I somehow agree with what the President said because I agree with the need for changes. However, I do not agree with the said accomplishments of the current Presidency because they barely made a ripple.

Another bombing wave in London

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

I just learned that a series of bombs exploded in London awhile ago. It’s really getting scary out there. It started around midnight Philippine time. According to CNN, there were 4 blasts. 3 in the subway and 1 in a bus. This is just like the bombing there 2 weeks ago.

Louie also sent me an email warning me from going to malls this weekend. She received a text from a reliable source that there might be a terrorist or public disturbance that is being planned.

Zombie Dogs

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

I first read this on popbitch but I found more reliable sources. Anyway, Scientists at Pittsburg’s Safar Center for Resuscitation Research found a way to bring back to life newly dead dogs. This is good news for die-hard dog lovers but it’s a bit disturbing and disgusting.

SCIENTISTS have created eerie zombie dogs, reanimating the canines after several hours of clinical death in attempts to develop suspended animation for humans.
US scientists have succeeded in reviving the dogs after three hours of clinical death, paving the way for trials on humans within years.

Pittsburgh’s Safar Centre for Resuscitation Research has developed a technique in which subject’s veins are drained of blood and filled with an ice-cold salt solution.

The animals are considered scientifically dead, as they stop breathing and have no heartbeat or brain activity.

But three hours later, their blood is replaced and the zombie dogs are brought back to life with an electric shock.

Plans to test the technique on humans should be realised within a year, according to the Safar Centre.

However rather than sending people to sleep for years, then bringing them back to life to benefit from medical advances, the boffins would be happy to keep people in this state for just a few hours,

But even this should be enough to save lives such as battlefield casualties and victims of stabbings or gunshot wounds, who have suffered huge blood loss.

During the procedure blood is replaced with saline solution at a few degrees above zero. The dogs’ body temperature drops to only 7C, compared with the usual 37C, inducing a state of hypothermia before death.

Although the animals are clinically dead, their tissues and organs are perfectly preserved.

Damaged blood vessels and tissues can then be repaired via surgery. The dogs are brought back to life by returning the blood to their bodies, giving them 100 per cent oxygen and applying electric shocks to restart their hearts.

Tests show they are perfectly normal, with no brain damage.

“The results are stunning. I think in 10 years we will be able to prevent death in a certain segment of those using this technology,” said one US battlefield doctor.

Yay! I woke up early today.

I was annoyed last night because I couldn’t access my blog. The database got erased for some strange reason but I can post now so it’s alright.

I’m supposed to go back to my therapist this week but I didn’t make an appointment. I really don’t feel like digging up my past. Just thinking about it makes me feel ill in the stomach. I know I need to get to it eventually but I’m just scared. I don’t think I’m ready to do that yet.

Artificial earthquake and tsunami

Monday, July 18th, 2005

This is scary. Here’s an excerpt of the article.

According to scientists and geologists, the earth’s brittle tectonic plates can be made to move against each other at a faster rate with the use of pulsating electromagnetic flux generated artificially by extraterrestrial or terrestrial human technologies.

The artificial pulsating electromagnetic flux can be generated by either the position of a set of neutron stars or black holes far away in the middle of galaxy or by artificial generation of the pulsating electromagnetic waves.

Many countries are experimenting with pulsating electromagnetic flux to create low intensity tectonic movements or low level superficial land slides.

The earthquake and resulting Tsunami in Sumatra could have been caused by this method. As a matter of fact, between November 2004 and March 2005, the earth saw major earthquakes and Tsunamis that outpaces anything we have seen in modern times.

Online writing workshops

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

Wide Eyed Workshops will soon conduct online workshops for aspiring Asian writers. WEW is based in Los Angeles and it’s a non-profit organization. Workshops on writing for horror, short films, graphic novels, and sex scenes will be conducted this month but unfortunately for us in the Philippines, we wouldn’t be able to attend them. Animae (a regular poster commenter here) is one of the facilitators and she said that there are plans of putting the classes online. I’m not a writer but I’m really interested in the lessons. Some of you might be better with words so this is a really good opportunity to enhance your skills. Spread the word, guys!

Blog mentioned in article

Loryces pointed out that my Gaiman account was mentioned in an Inquirer article. I don’t know if I should panic now. Yoikes!

London blast

Friday, July 8th, 2005

I think every nation in the world is on tenterhooks because of the terrorist bombing in London. I don’t think there’s any danger in the Philippines but it’s still better to be safe than sorry. This week’s depressing photo of the week is in remembrance of those wounded and killed in the bombing. My heart goes out to them.

Reuters People fix candles during a vigil for victims killed by the London bombings in Edinburgh July 7, 2005. Four blasts tore through packed London underground trains and a bus on Thursday, killing at least 37 people in the British capital’s deadliest peacetime attack and disrupting a summit of world leaders.

According to Inq7, a Filipina was hurt during the the blast but she’s out of danger.

Neil Gaiman coming to the Philippines

Saturday, July 2nd, 2005

I just learned that Neil Gaiman (famous for the Sandman comics) will be coming to the Philippines. He’ll be signing books in the following Fully Booked branches.

Rockwell - July 9
Greenhils - July 10
July 11 - July 11

I don’t know the exact time he’ll be there but I want to see him in person. I’m not a big fan and hardly read Sandman but I’ve read all his books and loved American Gods. I’ll probably make him sign my copy of that or my hardbound Coraline.

I was in Rockwell’s Fully Booked earlier and saw Tim Burton’s “Match Boy and Stick Girl Box Set” which I have on my Amazon wish list. They’re selling it for P1,350. I was already in the queue for the cashier but decided not to buy it since I still have a sizable credit card debt. Oh well.
