Gothic Archies - Scream and Run Away

Posted by: dementia   in Euphony, Literati, Moving Pictures

I was looking for the video of Gothic Archies’ “Smile, No One Cares How You Feel” when I stumbled upon this neat video by the said band. There’s no video for the song I mentioned but ANYTHING by Stephin Merritt (aka God) and his gazillion bands is good. This video is for Lemony Snicket’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events” where Mr. Snicket aka Daniel Handler collaborated with Stephin and his Gothic Archies to produce a series of songs based on the books. There’s this funny video of Snicket and Merritt during a book signing. It made me realize how funny Mr. Snicket really is. He’s bigger than life. I’ve only read up to book 2 and got tired of it. The movie was amazing though. Loved the actors, the costumes, the end and beginning credits, etc. Stephin Merritt is one of my idols so combine this awesome lyricist/musician with an author who wants to make children depressed, hahaha that’s fun times!

Twilight Obsession

   Posted by: dementia   in Literati

I’m obsessed with this series right now. So obsessed that it haunts me in my dreams and follows me during waking hours. It’s thrilling and frustrating at the same time and I just want to keep on rereading and rereading Twilight and New Moon (Eclipse was a disappointment for me) until I get sick of them. I haven’t encountered a book this addicting for years and I hardly have the patience to wait for the next book which, unfortunately, will be released late next year. Ugh! I keep on thinking about the characters. Bella. Edward. Edward. Bella. I want to be Bella and have my own Edward. *sigh* I want a vampire lover too! Anyway, I have individual reviews for each book. Just click on the links in this entry but there are spoilers.

Harry Potter Withdrawal (no spoilers)

   Posted by: dementia   in Literati

I finished reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows last night. The book made me bawl a lot but thinking about it now, something seems to be lacking. Maybe it’s just me but I felt like the ‘big BOOM’ didn’t come. Still, I enjoyed reading it and I will read it again soon because I might have missed something. In fact, I want to read the whole series again because I can’t get over the fact that it’s all over now.

I don’t consider myself to be a big Harry Potter fan even if I bought all the books and watched all the movies. I’m not the type who would like up on the first day of the release or cosplay as a Hogwarts student. Still, the series has been a part of me for years and I’m sad that there wouldn’t be a Harry Potter book in the future. It’s kind of like losing a friend.

Guro Fan

Posted by: dementia   in Bloody Hell, Japanophile, Literati

I’m a big fan of Trevor Brown, an artist known for creating cute but grotesque images. I didn’t know that his art is considered as guro until I went to gurochan.net. For those not in the know,  guro is a type of visual art which combines the macabre with erotica. The movement originated in Japan and can be found in art, cinema, and music. It’s definitely not for the easily offended and weak-stomached. So while browsing around the site, I discovered the art of Yock. He makes great CG art which I guess is considered as guro. I also discovered a great blog which features scanlations of some guro manga. I just read Falling by Junji Ito and enjoyed it a lot.

da Vinci is the man

Posted by: dementia   in General, Literati

I just finished reading The Da Vinci Code and I can honestly say that it blew my mind away. It’s a book which is hard to put down and it really makes the readers think, question the establishment, and raise awareness of the struggles in Christianity. I was raised as a Catholic so at an early age, I was made to believe that the Bible is the truth, that Jesus wasn’t entirely human, that the Church couldn’t harm a fly. But I learned to ask questions about the religion a long time ago and there were just a lot of aspects in it that doesn’t make sense. Ever since then, I considered myself pagan and chose to worship the Goddess. The Da Vinci Code made me aware that there are secret societies who worship the Goddess form and are there to pass on and protect the knowledge from generation to generation. I became aware that there are controversies concerning the true holiness of Jesus Christ (him never being married, etc.). I also became more aware of how ugly the Church can really get. But what I find strange is that the book made me admire Jesus. Although I don’t worship him or anything, the book threw him in a different, more human life. The book even said Jesus was a real feminist and that’s really something.

The version I read wasn’t the illustrated one so I’m searching the net for photos of Leonardo Da Vinci’s works. I find him intriguing now after learning about his flambouyant and genius past. If you want more resources on the book, there are a lot on the net.
