Ziggy the cat’s 17-day journey from Israel to UK

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

I got this from Yahoo News. So cute!

Ziggy the cat used up at least one of his nine lives after surviving for 17 days without food on a 2,300 mile voyage that took him from northern Israel to England.

The skinny white cat named after Ziggy Stardust — the character created by David Bowie in the 1970s, because like the rock star he has one green and one blue eye — made his epic trip as a stowaway in a 40-foot container.

His journey began when he wandered into a consignment of plastic goods which were then sealed in Afula in Israel and shipped from Haifa on October 31.

It ended when he emerged, exhausted, starving and dehydrated, at a warehouse in Whitworth in Lancashire on Friday.

“When the container was finally opened, staff unloading it got a real surprise when this fluffy white cat shot out,” said Colin Barton, the local authority’s animal health officer who helped capture Ziggy.

“I think he had probably used up some of his nine lives.”

The cat had not only survived but was able to resist capture for five hours.

“I think he was scared to death,” said James Ratcliff, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). “He’d travelled all that way and got to a strange country and ran for his life.”

Ziggy’s background or owners remain a mystery as he had no collar or microchip, but the RSCPA believe he is someone’s pet because he is so friendly. He will now stay in quarantine in Britain for six months as a precaution against rabies.

Destiny Cable sucks but I don’t have any other choice

Grrr. I hate my ISP. I don’t know what’s wrong with their system but the connection is intermittent especially during the times when my family is online. Some technicians came here while we were at the office and they supposedly fixed the problem. They fixed the connection alright. We’re online all the time but browsing is agony. The connection is too slow. It takes more than 2 minutes just to open a webpage. I called their customer service and the lady said she’ll send technicians here tomorrow…er….today.

I am looking for a better broadband ISP but the ones I’ve asked don’t cover my area. :stress: My office subscribes to EVO DSL and their service is great. My office is 5 minutes away from my house but they don’t service where I live. Boo! Globelines’ office is around 7 minutes away from here as well but like EVO, they don’t offer DSL here. Why the hell is that?! I’m so sick and tired of Destiny Cable.

Know your rights

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

Media hounds are running after consumers for the littlest things like encoding the CD you bought into MP3 format so you can use it for your ipod. OR buying a brand new book then selling it for half the price. The copyright freaks are becoming overzealous that they’re starting to step on consumer rights. Organizations such as eff.org want consumers to be aware of their rights so they are fighting a hard battle with the money-hungry capitalists. The best way to support those organizations is to become aware of what we are against.

Scott Klepper wrote an introduction to copyfighting which can be easily understood by ordinary mortals like us. Here’s an excerpt:

What’s a Copyfighter?
I think a lot of people incorrectly assume that Copyfighters are people who believe that copyright should be abolished and that everything should be free. Copyfighters aren’t saying that all media should be freely distributed. We are saying that as consumers of media (film, television, software, literature, etc.) we have certain rights that we would like to protect. One of these rights is Fair Use. Fair Use means that you can reuse copyrighted work without permission as long as you are commenting on it, or copying/parodying the original. Fair Use is what allows you to quote song lyrics when writing a review of a new CD. Another right is First Sale. First Sale means that when you buy something, you own it and are thus entitled to sell it to someone else. First Sale is what allows you to buy a book, read it, then sell it on half.com for someone else to enjoy.

Another bombing wave in London

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

I just learned that a series of bombs exploded in London awhile ago. It’s really getting scary out there. It started around midnight Philippine time. According to CNN, there were 4 blasts. 3 in the subway and 1 in a bus. This is just like the bombing there 2 weeks ago.

Louie also sent me an email warning me from going to malls this weekend. She received a text from a reliable source that there might be a terrorist or public disturbance that is being planned.

Zombie Dogs

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

I first read this on popbitch but I found more reliable sources. Anyway, Scientists at Pittsburg’s Safar Center for Resuscitation Research found a way to bring back to life newly dead dogs. This is good news for die-hard dog lovers but it’s a bit disturbing and disgusting.

SCIENTISTS have created eerie zombie dogs, reanimating the canines after several hours of clinical death in attempts to develop suspended animation for humans.
US scientists have succeeded in reviving the dogs after three hours of clinical death, paving the way for trials on humans within years.

Pittsburgh’s Safar Centre for Resuscitation Research has developed a technique in which subject’s veins are drained of blood and filled with an ice-cold salt solution.

The animals are considered scientifically dead, as they stop breathing and have no heartbeat or brain activity.

But three hours later, their blood is replaced and the zombie dogs are brought back to life with an electric shock.

Plans to test the technique on humans should be realised within a year, according to the Safar Centre.

However rather than sending people to sleep for years, then bringing them back to life to benefit from medical advances, the boffins would be happy to keep people in this state for just a few hours,

But even this should be enough to save lives such as battlefield casualties and victims of stabbings or gunshot wounds, who have suffered huge blood loss.

During the procedure blood is replaced with saline solution at a few degrees above zero. The dogs’ body temperature drops to only 7C, compared with the usual 37C, inducing a state of hypothermia before death.

Although the animals are clinically dead, their tissues and organs are perfectly preserved.

Damaged blood vessels and tissues can then be repaired via surgery. The dogs are brought back to life by returning the blood to their bodies, giving them 100 per cent oxygen and applying electric shocks to restart their hearts.

Tests show they are perfectly normal, with no brain damage.

“The results are stunning. I think in 10 years we will be able to prevent death in a certain segment of those using this technology,” said one US battlefield doctor.

Not much of a day but I liked it still. I like it when it rains all day and I’m inside the house. It’s comforting. Cool too. I didn’t do much except watch tv and go online. While online, I added my cats to Catster. It’s a nice display site for kitties. There’s also Dogster where I plan to put Peanut’s picture soon.

I just watched “Blue Crush” on HBO and it made me want to take up surfing. I’ve tried boogey boarding in Honolulu but it was crazy hard. I had to be towed by the jet skis to reach the shore because of the killer undertow. But I talked to some surfer guys and they said it’s easier for girls to learn surfing. I declined during that time because I was chicken shit. The waves in Blue Crush are insane but I’m planning on surfing them. I think that was shot in Oahu. The waves I want are little safe ones. Just enough to push me to stand on the board. My family has plans to go to Hawaii this December. I don’t know if it would push through but I think I want to try surfing. I just wonder if the waves there are cold during that time.
